Lonely, Charlie is Lonely

Charlie has now spent one full day in his own isolated room and he’s doing really well. So far, the blood culture hasn’t shown any signs that there will be any serious complications with the MRSA. The final results should be back tomorrow and we’ll know for sure exactly what we’re dealing with. But if today was any indication, he’s not going to let this bump in the road stop him from being a healthy and happy baby.

Our adorably cute baby boy is up to 967 grams (about 2 lb, 2 oz) and is eating like a true DiGiuseppe male: 5 ml of breast milk every three hours. By comparison, Annaliegh is only eating 2 ml, so it’s pretty clear that he’s going to like his food! Brooke and I both got to hold him for about 45 minutes, but only after visiting the girls first. That’s the rule: we can spend as much time as we want with Charlie, but it has to be after we seen Lily and Annaleigh. And after our visit, we have to remove our gloves and gowns and scrub down again. It’s not fun, but at least we get to see him.

Lily is holding her own on the respirator. She still has plenty of episodes but not nearly as many as she was just a few days ago. She got her second dose of the heart medicine today and Dr. Hiatt was encouraged by the reduction in her murmur. Grandma Pam and Nana both got to witness Lily getting her sponge bath and daily weighing (she’s at 770 grams, or 1 lb, 11 oz), and that’s always a sight to see. She has quite the flair for being a bit over dramatic!

Annaleigh is… the same. There’s nothing new to report, really. She’s eating a little but not exactly putting on the weight we would like to see; she’s at 725 grams right now (1 lb, 9.5 oz) so she’s now the smallest by a good bit. But she’s clearly the most stable, having the fewest episodes and she easily recovers from them when she does have them. Brooke was able to capture a picture of her elusive eyes (finally!). She’s opening them just a little, and only for a few seconds, but that’s the same as Lily and Charlie—they just both did it a couple weeks ago.

In other news, I made a big dent today in clearing out the room we’re going to use a nursery. It’s been strange with that room; we’ve wanted to work on it, but nervous to do something for when the babies are finally home. We don’t want to jinx anything and we know their health could turn any second, so we’re constantly apprehensive about it. This evening, I cleaned out the closets and moved the bookshelf to the basement. I went to the hardware store for paint and came home with Zippedy Doo Dah, a nice calming green color that Brooke picked out to match the bedding. This weekend we’ll start priming and cutting wood for the trim (with Uncle John’s help, of course).

Looks like your babies are doing well! You are right, the NICU is a roller coaster for parents, but once my son overcame his brain injury from birth and he was just in the NICU to master feeding/growing, the worrying subsided and was replaced with anxiousness to get him home where he belonged!

Your family is in my thoughts & prayers. Enjoy decorating the nursery!!! Your babies will be home to enjoy it in no time!

Yay for 2+ pounds! Sorry that Charlie is lonely but hopefully he continues his weight gain in there and everything is ok.
Annaleigh and Lily need to catch up with the eating! Maybe they are like their mommy and need a cookie or something ;)

Looks like Charlie will be helping with Mommy's food blog someday!! Glad to hear they're doing well. This blog is the first thing I read everyday at work. I'll be away next week and I'm really going to miss all of the updates.

I'm glad to hear the babies are growing...even a little bit is encouraging. I can't imagine what you have gone through but we are all here for you. I try to read the updates every day and always look for the positive and it seems you do too. We love you and Brooke and can't wait to meet the babies sometime in the fall. Besides, the Mets are awful so there is nothing to be watching there.

I'm so glad the babies are doing well. And I love that you guys are starting on the nursery. I know that has to be a tough decision but I'm sure it's good to have a project to work on.

Glad that Charlie's MRSA is treatable. You might've said this in a previous post, so sorry if I forgot, but they're on something to help boost their immune systems right? How scary that Lily's still having episodes, hope she gets better soon. Glad that Annaleigh is starting to peak out into the world! : ) FX for all of your babies!
